Markham discusses mistakes that Norbert has made. He wants him to have strenghth to do what is right. Then he discusses Norbert going to Atlantic City to seek an astrologer and he wants himto use his own judgement and discretion.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
